The theme for this month’s Unplugged Project (via Unplug Your Kids) is bread. This reminded me of something my own mother did with me when I was a little girl.
Materials
Bread, butter and a cup.
Method
Twist the cup on the bread to punch a hole. Eat.
The children thought this activity/lunch was brilliant (bless their little socks). You can use a cookie cutter but I find a cup works better with little hands. Make sure you talk about the shape of the bread. You may even like to sing “The Wheels on the Bus” or talk about what circle shapes you can see. Never miss an opportunity to incorporate learning into an activity (but not in a forced way).
Make lunch fun for little ones.

That bit if bread makes the perfect egg ring especially on the BBQ. I think it’s called toad in a hole.
What a great way to use the left-over bread Nicole. Thanks for sharing! xx
We do this quite a lot, some times we use a cookie cutter shape like a teddy (which you can get 2 shapes out of 1 piece of bread if it is a small shape) and put 100′s and 1000′s on it..the kids love it!
100′s and 1000′s are the best!
Molly had a twinkle little star lunch today. I used a little star cookie cutter to cut out peanut butter sandwich stars and then cut more stars from slices of pear.
I’m always amazed at how I can get little ones to eat things they normally might not just by changing the shape! (wonder if it works on husbands??)
LOL – let me know if it works on your hubby and I’ll try it with mine
Could be a nice accompaniment to soup as well.
Oh yes… soup. Perfect for winter!
Isn”t it funny how a little change like that can make bread so much more interesting!
That’s it! My children ate it all with no fuss.
I do this sometimes with the kids’ lunch if I’m making a bento box for them, using a gingerbread man cutter. My son calls it ‘people sandwiches’.
people sandwiches… so cute
Yep, I like to do this with cookie cutters sometimes too. Isn’t it lovely how children get excited about the simplest things? Too cute.
Great idea to use a cup so they can make the shape themselves!
Yes, I find a cup works the best. Even my two-year-old managed to do it!
Kids just love doing things for themselves. It takes patient parents to let them. Just love your ideas.
It funny I was just playing with bread this morning.Cutting cinnamon toast up into halves, then quarters, and finally eights. Not sure how we got on the subject of maths this morning, but was just explaining it to my 8 year old who loves visuals.
Shelly
Perfect example Shelly of learning as you go… love it. Good job Mum.
You’re so right about never missing a fun learning opportunity! Lunch is a great way to bring in some learning.
In my experience (and you would be an expert at this being a home educator) children learn best when they are doing something.
I tried this, this morning for my Preppie who has taken to not eating his sandwiches. He thought it was ‘awesome cool’! Thanks!
Lisa, thank you for telling me! I LOVE it when people try my ideas and then tell me how they went — so thank you! xx
I’m so lazy with food! little soldiers is as good as it gets with sangers here – note to self… must try harder
Give the cup a try Michelle, it’s easy-peezy
I love it! Simple, fun, cheap (practically FREE!).
Keep the ideas coming
Yep almost free (gotta love that!)
So simple but so effective!
As a kid, I used to squish bread up into a cube .. always tasted so much better! There you go … a 3D shape!! he he!
OMG!!! Soooo cute and soooo fun! I can’t wait until by baby is eating solids and going to school, just so I can make these!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
