Button Craft

April 13, 2010

This post is part of the  Monthly Unplugged Project run by Unplug Your Kids.  The idea of the project is to be inspired by the word of the month and create an ’unplugged’ activity to do with your child/ren. For the month of April the word is FLAT.

So, the word is flat.  My Brainstorming looked a little like this:

The stand out for me was BUTTONS; I love buttons. They are so cute and colourful. Buttons, buttons, buttons; what could I do with buttons?

I purchased the buttons (shown above) from Spotlight. Second hand shops often sell buttons in bulk or use the ones that have been sitting in the sewing drawer for 5 years.

I designed two simple outlines for the children to fill in with buttons of different sizes and colours.  I can’t remember when I’ve seen them so excited about a craft!  They got straight into it, sifting through the buttons to find ‘just the right one’.

Here are my templates.  You are welcome to print them out by clicking on the images.

You will need:

  • Template (Use mine or make up your own.  Just keep it simple for best results)
  • Buttons
  • Clear Craft Glue

If you want to take this craft further, it can be easily turned into wall art.

You will need:

  • Canvas to size
  • Paint for the background
  • Cut out buttoned shape
  • Extra buttons for a border
  • Clear Craft Glue

I LOVED how they turned out!

That is so weird Kelly, I just finished a button craft with the kids last week. We used a canvas and traced all different shaped circles and then glued the buttons around the shapes. The kids loved it. Great minds think alike. xo

HA! That’s awesome Chrissy! I bet they turned out great. Did the children enjoy the activity?

They look great up on the wall. And I think the frame of buttons around the edge finished it off perfectly.

Thanks Catherine! I was wondering whether I should do a border or not and I’m glad I did!
