On a recent family getaway, my husband and I found a beautiful child-friendly rainforest walk to do with our four children. The Mary Cairncorss Scenic Reserve is on the outskirts of Maleny on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Here are some of the highlights:
- Wheelchair and stroller friendly walking tracks
- Ecological Education Centre
- Read about the rainforest’s history
- Guided walks available
- Coffee and food available in the cafe-Kiosk
- Playground, BBQ and picnic tables
The duration of the walk for our family (slow) was 1 hour. The track is flat and smooth so even my 2 year old was able to walk most of the trail. We all enjoyed the sounds, textures, colours and beauty of the rainforest. Here are some of the colours and textures I captured.
If your family is looking for a fun family day out this school holidays, I highly recommend the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (Queensland).

Wow that is really lovely. A little closer to Brisbane is one we love, not a rainforest but a boardwalk along Deep Water Bend, Off Hoyland Street Bracken Ridge Bald Hills. We ride there but there is bbq, playground boat ramp etc

Quite nice for a family get together.
gorgeous Kel!!
It’s so nice that things are becoming more family friendly these days!
Wow – that looks lovely.
Have you tried the tree top walk at O’Rielly’s? It’s shorter and wheelchair, pram friendly.
Think I will have to check this one out tho.
I love Mary Cairncross. I loved it as a kid and I love it more as a mum!! A walk in the rainforest with kids is about my #1 fave thing to do.
Yeah SquiggleMum, mine too! Michelle, I’ll have to check out O’Rielly’s walk. I have been there, a long time ago pre-children. Bec, loving family friendly. Rizoleey – I’m always looking for great places to walk with the children – thanks.
My husband keeps raving on about Maleny, We just moved here from adelaide and are hoping to go for a rainforest walk with our toddler on the christmas weekend. Thanks so much for posting this! Now we know where to go.
