I bet you never knew $2 could go so far! This is our $2 Jar. As you can see, it’s quite empty at the moment, but the idea is to fill the jar with $2 coins. It’s a fun and easy way to save a little money for a rainy day. I would guess this jar filled with $2 coins would amount to at least a couple of thousand dollars.
* Get a clear jar so you can see progress
* Only put $2 coins in the jar, not loose change
* Teach your child about saving as you go
* You won’t even notice the loss of $2 over a long period
* Try not to dip into the Jar (hard, I know)
* Reap the rewards

I love this idea but I'm really bad at not dipping! Our saving goes straight into a bank account and so does the childrens – we show them their statments so they can see how it's growing. It's great that you can teach your children self control by setting such a good example.
xx
@Michelle, Good idea Michelle. I like the idea of showing the kids the statements! We have bank account for the kids too.
I like this idea
I’m kinda doing the same. I’ve just started putting $20 a week away in a savings account so right before Christmas I can do a HUGE grocery shop so I don’t have to worry about it over the Christmas break
Great idea Tina. Even just a little bit helps at the end of the year hey! Especially with your large family!
I started a $2 jar a few weeks ago. It is very similar to the one pictured above and has a little counter that adds up the coins as you slide them in. I sealed mine closed with duct tape and hid it in the top of the wardrobe. Don’t want hubby finding it
Planning to buy myself an ipad
OOOOOO… iPAD!!!!
Oh I do a version of this … all my loose change goes into it, but I do dip into it for correct tuckshop money. Anything left at the end of the year goes towards Christmas presents or a holiday …It’s amazing how much small change adds up!
@MaidInAustralia, I always seem to raid it for when I do tuckshop (mostly that means when I’m not organised enough!)
We have a money box but we can’t open it unless we use a tin opener! (otherwise i dip too!) I like the idea of using a glass one though because the kids can see the amount inside growing. Learning to save is sooo important!
@Meegan, the trick with those is to slip a butter into the slot with it upside down lol
@Liz – Mumstrosity, BAHAHAHA! Sneaky Liz… sneaky…
Love this idea, will be heading out the to the shops to grab a clear container =)
@katie b @ aussiebum, DO Katie… It’s actually quite fun and even a little addictive. I’ve been known to ask for change in $2 coins…it’s true…
We have a 5c jar! We’ve had it for 5 years. No one EVER wants to count out 5c coins. Its a huge jar, and when it’s full we will take it to the bank.
It might take years more to fill it, but it will have lots of money in it
@Liz – Mumstrosity, That reminds me Liz. I used to collect 5c coins too. It’s true that no one wants to actually count them… good for saving and no dipping then hey…
always do this then use it 2 buy christmas presents, i also have a problem with dipping though so I buy one that you have to break to open.
@Julia, I usually do it around Christmas too but thought I’d start it up early anyway… I dip too. I admit it. But I do tend to save more than I dip
usually lol

we do a similar thing. We started it last year before our holiday. Straight after that, we started again for our next holiday. We have a money tin that says ‘Holiday Fund’ on it and you can’t open it unless you use a can opener. I like that idea! We’re not overly regular, but we empty out our wallets of loose change every little while, or I’ll put a few dollars in when I remember. My hubby is bad at buying softdrinks at work, so he has started emptyying his change in the tin so he can’t buy them
Our holiday is in 2 weeks, so we will count our ‘luxury spending money’ then – we use it for a nice meal or something like that for the whole family, that doesn’t have to come out of our budget. Although I like the clear jar, I’m not that disciplined I’m afraid!
@Kathryn Rodda, Have a wonderful holiday Kathryn! How fun is it to count all the money!?
@Kelly B,
It’s not always alot, but enough for a nice family takeawy or something. We don’t know if we are actually going away, but Andy has 2 weeks off in March. We are taking the boys to Seaworld, they are very excited!
Very fun
I love this!
I have a $5 jar that gets a regular clearing out for special things like dinner out etc but I think starting a $2 until Christmas is a great idea!
I’m off to find another jar….
